Maintaining a rigorous standard of hygiene in nail salons is the upmost in client retention. If your customers think there’s a risk of cross-contamination when they get their nails done, they will find another salon. Besides the customer experience, we also want to set excellent nail hygiene standards to prevent infections. Why is Nail Hygiene Important?

Nail salon regulations in the UK and Europe require that we keep the same cleanliness levels as any healthcare clinic. This protects customers from unethical practices and cross-contamination of nail salon equipment. The modern consumer will research a nail salon before they make an appointment. There are thousands of articles out there that teach them how to spot a dirty salon and you don’t want to be that very salon they have been warned about!

The Health and Safety Executive have outlined their research into the cleanliness of nail bars in the UK. The research contains extensive studies into nail bar hygiene. The study found that 11.8% of nail technicians used an electric file and shared it between clients.

An unhygienic nail bar can cause bacterial infections in the nail bed, in extreme cases run the risk of contaminants such as MRSA and Hepatitis. This could severely impact your business’s reputation.

Nail Salon Sanitisation Checklist

If you run a nail bar or salon, here is our nail salon sanitisation checklist to help you maintain high standards:

Time – Fit bookings around leaving enough space to clean nail desks and sanitise tools.
Wash – Wash your hands thoroughly between clients. Have clients wash their hands and insist they sanitise with anti bacterial sanitising spray or gel
Disinfect – Clean each item of furniture or equipment between every client. Wash the area with disinfectant spray and a warm cloth.
Try and use disposable desk towels for every client.
Files – Clients want to see high standards of hygiene, particularly post-pandemic. Keep a folder full of poly pockets with each client’s separate files, orange wooden sticks, and buffer blocks. This limits cross-contamination. If you have files that can be sanitised ensure they have been sprayed in between appointments and leave to soak overnight if they are solution soak files.
