Hot Topic – Heat Spike FAQs

Why do I get heat spikes when using builder gels?

There are many reasons why heat spikes occur when using builder gels,

  • Over filling of the nail will leave it thin & this will have a huge impact on whether a heat spike will occur, make sure that you are using the correct file when prepping the nail & always be mindful of how much natural nail you have filled away.
  • Using the correct lamp for the builder gels, please be sure to be using Cuccio lamps with your builder gels, the gels have been formulated to be compatible with the lamps, using other branded lamps may cause a heat spike to occur.
  • Applying the builder gel to thick will potentially cause a heat spike, if you find that your clients are continuously getting them then I would take a look at how thick you are applying the builder gels, having a base layer of builder gel then applying a little bead to work with on the nail will be enough but if you want to add extra strength to the clients nails then work in layers as this wont be a thick bead of gel to cure all in one go.
  • Make sure that there has been no trauma to the natural nail, if your nails are damaged before having builder gel on them then this will potentially cause a heat spike to occur as the nail is already sore.

What should I do if a heat spike occurs when using builder gels?

Ask your client to remove their hand from the lamp and wait for the spike to pass, sometimes pressing the finger down will help the spike go away. Let them know that the heat spike will pass, when building the rest of the nails be mindful of heat spikes & take into consideration the reasons for why heat spikes occur when using builder gels.
